Planning a Dashboard
A dashboard is a visual display of the most important information required to achieve one or more objectives. The information is consolidated and arranged on a single page so that it can be monitored at a glance. Planning includes the following steps:
- Classify the dashboard
- Define the objective of the dashboard
- Identify information needs
Step 1: Classify the Dashboard
- Identify who will be using the dashboard and what their role is.
- Determine the nature of their role: strategic, analytical or operational.
- Describe the data domain. For example, is the focus for this user safety performance, environmental, or both?
- What is the span of data this user will need? Corporate, divisional, regional, or a single site with possibly the need to draw comparisons to other similar sites?
Step 2: Define the Objective
- What is the objective of the user for whom you are creating a dashboard?
Step 3: Identify Information Needs
- What questions should the dashboard answer?
- What actions might be taken in response to these answers?
- Which questions are most important for achieving the objective?
Now that you have defined the plan for your dashboard, the next step is to build it.
