Completing a Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP)

Thanks for your feedback!
A Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) is a systematic examination of a process or operation to identify and evaluate problems that may represent risks or prevent efficient operation if there is a deviation from normal operating procedure.
A HAZOP focuses on identifying hazards in the workplace, while a JSA goes beyond this and handles the probability and risk of hazards. HAZOPs are typically used in very high-risk/high-hazard environments.
Completing a HAZOP in the Standard Job Safety Analysis capability involves the same workflow as that of a Job Safety Analysis.
The data entry mechanics are also virtually identical. However, rather than adding job steps, you’ll add deviations and guide words (more, less, as well as, etc.) to help describe them. You’ll add causes and consequences for each potential deviation, assess the risk levels, and add controls, recommendations, and actions to mitigate the potential risk.
Similar to JSA functionality, some of the options you’re able to select when completing your HAZOP are defined upon system setup by an administrator in the EHS List Editor (Guide Words, Likelihood, and Risk Level).
To get started on a HAZOP, select Operational Risk > Standard Job Safety Analysis > HAZOPs. Select Add New at the top of the HAZOPs page.
