Using a Force Gauge

Force measurements help you understand whether recommended push and pull force maximums are being exceeded in a job task. In turn, this information will help you determine direct causes and develop job improvement ideas.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when using a force gauge:

• • When using either the force gauge or dynamometers to gather data, take the average of at least 5 measurements. Discard any outlier measurements (very low or very high forces).
  • Use the proper end piece: use a large end piece for forces applied by the whole hand, and a small end piece for forces applied by a finger.
  • Apply the force with a steady movement, and in the same direction and orientation as it is performed during the task. Applying the force gauge too quickly or too slowly will affect the reading.
  • Choose the correct mode and units. Use peak or max mode to measure initial force and tracking, or normal mode to measure sustained force. (Refer to the user guide for your force gauge to learn how to adjust the settings.)
